International pastry chef hidden in Weston?!

While on my stroll down at Weston, tired, hot and hungry, I attemped to find a place that would still be open at this time. Late afternoon. Walking pass all the restaurants, not a single one was open. This was because lunch service ended two hours ago. With little hope left I finished walking down the street and near the end of the street I stumbled across a patisserie… and it still had the open sign up. I still have hope!!

There are approximately 20 seats available at Chris’s patisserie and bakehouse for dine in customers. On the back wall, the owners has three photos of tantalising cakes and dessert, which instantly gets my tummy grumbling.

The grumbling get even worse when went up p top the cake cabinet. There is a large variety of baked goods ranging from cakes to pastries and tarts. After spending five minutes standing in front of the cabinet. I decided that I’ll get the Hazelnut buttercream slice and a Bananarama smoothie. Well maybe an Apricot danish as well.

The Hazelnut buttercream slice is simply two layers of sponge cake filled with a light and creamy hazelnut buttercream, topped with semi crystallised almonds flakes. When you take a bite of the slice, you can experience the three textures evident in the slice. The slightly dense sponge cake is mellowed by the hazelnut buttercream. All is topped off with the crunch of the semi crystallised almonds flakes.

The accompanying beverage I ordered with the slice was the Bananarama smoothie. I ordered this instead of coffee to fool myself into being healthy. This smoothie is made up of banana (duh), milk, honey and ice cream. I was actually looking forward to the smoothie but was severely disappointed when they served it up in those paper milkshake cups. Also the straw was too thin or maybe the smoothie was too thick as it was really difficult to suck through the straw.

No visit to a patisserie is complete without some form of pastry. There was a range of baked pastry goods in their pastry cabinet. Escargot (snail), croissants and danishs. I went with the apricot danish due to the vibrant orange colour. The danish was pretty large which is not a bad problem but it made the apricot half seem really small. Upon cutting into the danish, my first impression was it was dense. However when I ate it, the pastry was quite flaky. The saying ‘never judge a book by its cover’ is so right. I should not had judged the deliciousness of a danish until I actually take a bite.
